Research Experience:

Being an epidemiologist and public health specialist I have been working on disease burden estimation and have been involved evaluation of vaccine efficacy and effectiveness in endemic settings for more than 20 years. My work on cholera, typhoid and rotavirus and COVID-19 led to policy translation and was taken up by the public health care delivery system in India. I have conducted several national and international collaborative projects. I have also worked on environmental surveillance for typhoid, and rational use of drugs, especially the use of antibiotics in tertiary care hospitals in India, and could show the gap in prescribing patterns in tertiary care, which calls for strengthening of Antimicrobial Stewardship program. My studies, in addition to establishing evidence to support the inclusion of Rota viral vaccines in the national immunization schedule, demonstrated for the first time that the two existing vaccines (Rotavac & Rotasiil) can be used interchangeably for regular immunization.

My recent work on cholera disease burden assessment using a seroepidemiological approach established a feasible, sustainable alternative method for cholera surveillance, as well as the establishment of sentinel monitoring sites in high cholera burden areas to supplement India's current cholera surveillance system.

Currently, I am working on the implementation of oral cholera vaccine using state health machinery in a selected district of West Bengal to assess the impact, in collaboration with Govt. of West Bengal. I am also conducting randomized clinical trials on JE vaccine interchangeability, single dose of HPV vaccine as well as efficacy of Dengue vaccine.

Research Interest:

My research interest and area of work is public health epidemiology and randomized controlled trials, with special reference to bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance. Health system research is another area of work where I am involved
