Dr. Biswa Jyoti Borkakoti

Scientist F

ICMR- Regional Medical Research Centre, NE, Dibrugarh

About Profile

Dr. Borkakoty has led the Regional Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory scheme at ICMR-RMRC NE since its establishment in 2014. He has served as the Principal Investigator for over 15 projects and has successfully managed several national multicentric studies, including those on hospital-based Rotavirus surveillance, Influenza-like illness surveillance, Viral hepatitis, and HPV in Northeast India. With more than 85 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Borkakoty has also contributed to two book chapters. He has filed a patent for a novel method to diagnose and differentiate Omicron sub-variants of SARS-CoV-2 using qRT-PCR and has played a key role in developing a paper-based capacitive biosensor for rapid COVID-19 detection. Dr. Borkakoty and his team are actively involved in providing swift diagnostic services and outbreak support in Northeast India. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they conducted over 380,000 RT-PCR tests, aiding in the early diagnosis and management of cases in the region. Early in his career, Dr. Borkakoty received the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the International AIDS Society in 2007, in Sydney, Australia, for his research on HIV/AIDS and drug abuse. He is regularly invited to Regional, National and International conferences as a speaker on various topics on Medical Microbiology.
