ICMR- Regional Medical Research Centre, NE, Dibrugarh is one of the 26 permanent institutes of Indian Council of Medical Research. The Centre was established on 12th day of July in the year 1982. It covers the most remote and less developed eight states of the north-eastern region of India and is responsible for carrying out Biomedical Research in the region and runs with intramural grant from ICMR and extramural adhoc projects from different funding agencies.

Its current primary focus of research is on (i) Mosquito borne diseases (ii) HIV and drug abuse (iii) Trematode infection (iv) Haemoglobinopathies. The secondary focus of research of the center is on (i) Cancer nasopharynx, oesophagus, stomach (ii) Cardiovascular diseases (iii) Medicinal plants of NE India (iv) Nutrition. Subsequently, keeping in view of the research needs of the eight states of N.E. region of India, the Centre has identified a few newer areas of research.

To develop north-eastern states of India in bio-medical research and build up scientific man power

The goal of Regional Medical Research Centre, NE Region is to promote biomedical research in north-eastern states of India and build up technical man power, making a network of health facilities of the region and to collect information about traditional system of medicine with a multidisciplinary approach.

The mandate of Regional Medical Research Centre, NE Region is to carry out biomedical research in priority areas that are fixed on the following guidelines :

  1. Diseases having priority in National health programme
  2. Diseases common in two or more states of the region
  3. Diseases unique to the region
  4. Explore traditional knowledge

Dr. Kanwar Narain
Director, Regional Medical Research Center, N.E Region (ICMR)

Recent Northeast initiative of Indian Council of Medical Research has boosted biomedical Research in the region and the activities of Regional Medical Research Center (NE) to the newer height.

New Projects initiated under the scheme, will have good impact on medical research in areas of of national as well as regional priorities. It will also strengthen laboratories with state of the art equipments and help in building technical manpower in the region. This initiative is expected to open the doors of opportunities to young postgraduate for pursuing doctoral courses and they in turn will contribute to scientific development of our country.

To start with the projects have been chosen to strike a balance between the basic, applied and operational research areas. Building scientific database in Cancer. Cardiovascular diseases, haemoglobinopathy, Drug abuse and HIV, vector borne and food borne diseases in the region has also been emphasized in this projects. This will help in forming a baseline for reference and planning future research in these areas. Manpower trained in different projects will enrich resources with expert in the region.
